Indian mango exports to US set to double

India began exporting fresh mangoes to the United States in 2007, in exchange for opening the Indian market to imports of American Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Export volumes remained low.

According to local media, Indian professionals estimate that this year exports to the United States should double, exceeding 2,000 tons in the current financial year.

Due to growing US demand especially for Kesar mangoes. Variety cultivated in several Indian states (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana) the Kesar is considered a more robust variety with a longer shelf life than the Alphonso variety, well known to mango lovers.

As well as due to the fall in air transport costs which is a determining factor in increasing exports to the United States.

The United States is 7th in the ranking of Indian mango importing countries, behind Oman, Nepal and Kuwait. Far behind the main buyers are the United Arab Emirates (12,139.62 tons), the United Kingdom (2,768.76 tons) and Qatar (2,026.20 tons). During the last season India exported 22,963.78 tons of mangoes worth 48.53 million USD.
