Chilean Kiwi Committee anticipates low export volumes

The kiwi harvest season in Chile is nearing completion, and the final volume data is expected within a few days.

According to a recent report by the Chilean Kiwi Committee, the decline continues, and the current estimate shows a drop of approximately 14% compared to the previous year.

In contrast, New Zealand reported a significant drop of 31% in green kiwi compared to the previous season.

Meanwhile, sales in Greece and Italy are progressing: both countries are approaching the end of the season. Italy is being nearly 30 days ahead of its usual schedule for this time of the year. The current stock and consumption levels indicate 19,991 tons of local kiwi available in the Italian market, whereas last year during the same period, the warehouses had registered 33,543 tons.

Despite the decrease in overall volumes, the Committee highlights some positive aspects of Chilean kiwis this year. They have better sizes, excellent dry matter content, and improved storage conditions compared to previous years. Additionally, the dispatches are being carried out within the expected timeframe for the traditional season.

In terms of exports for weeks 17-18 of the season, a total of 43,393 tons have been shipped. Europe (excluding Russia) stands as the primary market, receiving 14,418 tons, followed by Latin America with 10,028 tons, the Far East with 9.59 tons, North America with 6,373 tons, Russia with 1,599 tons, and the Middle East with 1,406 tons.

For this season, the Kiwi Committee has projected a total export volume of 116,093 tons.

The Hayward variety remains the dominant, accounting for 94.9% of the total exported kiwis.
