In 2022, South Africa succeeded in exporting a volume of fresh products that was well above expectations and up +8.8% compared to the previous year.
According to PPECB (Perishable Products Export Control Board), the official export certification agency for perishable products in South Africa, the country exported just over 3.5 million tonnes of fresh produce last year.
“We are pleased to note that South Africa achieved record export figures in 2022. Despite the challenges faced. This represents an increase in volumes of 8.8% compared to the financial year 2020/2021” has said Lucien Jansen, director of PPECB.
Despite the difficulties (port congestion, adverse weather conditions, flooding) the PPECB believes that there is still significant growth potential in Asia, where shipments represent 19% of total South African exports.
