Qatar has managed to achieve self-sufficiency for some vegetables

In Qatar, local vegetable production almost doubled between 2017 and 2021 and continues to expand. Now local production of some vegetables exceeds consumption volumes.

Local media reports the words of Mubarak Al-Sahouti, executive director of trade relations at Hassad Food, who said that the volume of vegetables received from local farmers has increased in the current season by +20% compared to the previous season. previous season.

According to Mubarak Al-Sahouti the local market needs about 2,000 tons of cucumbers and about 5,000 to 6,000 tons of tomatoes per month. And the quantities currently supplied to the points of sale exceed these figures and lead to a significant drop in imports during the local production season.

This increase in Qatari production is the result of joint work and efforts between the private and public sectors. Farmers followed the ministry's plans, and the creation of the Mahaseel Society for Agricultural Marketing and Services solved their market access problems. Mahaseel takes over the sorting, packaging and marketing of produce, and farmers can focus their efforts on production.
