In Senegal, the national program for the development of the banana sector, set up 5 years ago, has greatly contributed to increasing national production.
During an interview with APS (Senegalese Press Agency), Aly Ngouille Ndiaye, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Equipment and Food Sovereignty, said that the country could be able to ensure its self-sufficiency by bananas in 2024.
Stating that currently Senegal produces 65,000 tons of bananas, a volume already providing 90% of national consumption.
Thanks to the national program for the development of the banana sector, estimated at 2.5 billion FCFA (4.1 million USD) and which was set up 5 years ago, Senegalese production has clearly progressed.
About 80% of national production comes from the Tambacounda region. Peak production runs from October to February.
