South African table grape exports could fall by around 8%

For the 2022/23 season, the volumes produced of table grapes should be lower than the 2 previous seasons and will lead to a decline in exported volumes.

According to the estimate made by SATI (South African Table Grape Industry Association) for the 2022/23 season, the harvest could reach around 71.7 million boxes (= 4.5 kg) for the high hypothesis and around 69.5 million cards for the low hypothesis. The number of boxes actually exported could drop below 70 million boxes, a lower volume than the 74.5 million boxes exported in the 2021/22 season and the 71.5 million boxes exported in the 2020/2020 season. 21.

Volumes produced in the Orange River and Northern regions are expected to contract by 12-17%, volumes in the Olifants, Berg and Hex River regions are expected to contract by 4-6%.

This decline in production could be explained by the decrease in the total number of hectares planted (decrease of 1% to 20,379 hectares) and by the decrease in hectares in full production (decrease of 1% to 18,765 hectares).
