Temporary suspension of fertilizer exports

The conflict in Ukraine has many repercussions on the energy and grain markets, but also on the market for agricultural inputs. Russia's decision to suspend fertilizer exports will impact the global market.

In Russia, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has recommended that fertilizer producers suspend their exports. Temporarily, until foreign logistics companies resume normal activity allowing the export delivery of Russian fertilizers. The ministry clarified that the needs of Russian farmers will continue to be covered.

Russia is a major player in the global agricultural input market. "Russia represents 13% of the world trade in intermediate fertilizer products (ammonia, phosphate rock, sulphur), and 16% of trade in finished fertilizers," said Marc Zribi, head of the Grains and Sugar unit at FranceAgriMer.

The Russian decision will lead to an increase in the price of fertilizers but also a lot of uncertainty regarding their availability. Russia accounting for 24% of global ammonia exports, 40% of global ammonium nitrate exports, 17% of global phosphate fertilizer exports and 20% of global potash exports.
