Kenya extends suspension of avocado exports
The export ban on 2 varieties of avocados had been imposed in November 2021. According to the investigation carried out, the crop is still immature and unfit for export.
The director of the Horticultural Crops Directorate (HCD), Benjamin Tito, said that the export ban on the Fuerte and Hass varieties continues and therefore the harvest remains suspended until further notice. The industry estimates that the export ban could remain in place until early March 2022.
The export ban on the Hass and Fuerte avocado varieties was imposed in November 2021 and was due to be reviewed in January 2022. The investigation, carried out at various farms across the country, concluded that the crop is still immature and unsuitable for export.
The export ban was imposed to curb the harvesting and export of immature fruit in order to protect the brand image of Kenyan avocado in foreign markets.
Exports of the Jumbo variety are allowed but only by air and for avocados weighing a minimum of 184 grams.
