In Madagascar, the 2021/2022 lychee campaign has just started in the Atsinanana region. Lychees will arrive in Europe well before the end of the year holidays.

 

This early date of the start of the season makes it possible to predict that the lychees will arrive in Europe well before the end of year celebrations which constitute a peak in European demand.

 

Madagascar is the 3rd largest producer of lychees in the world behind China and India and the 1st supplier to the European market. Last year, Madagascar exported nearly 13,000 tonnes of lychees to Europe. The other destinations are Russia, Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Morocco.

 

This year, a larger exported volume is envisaged. Favorable climatic conditions favored the development of fruits, which should present a size greater than that observed in 2020. In addition, due to an easing of the health crisis compared to last year, international markets could increase their demand.
