New perspectives for Tunisian pomegranates
In Tunisia, Tunisian pomegranate exports started on September 20 and the volume shipped during this season is expected to increase by around 4.34% compared to 2020.
According to an official from GIF (Groupement interprofessionnel des fruits), the volume harvested should total 106,000 tonnes, ie + 6% compared to 100,000 tonnes last season.
About 3,718 tonnes of pomegranates have already been exported for a value of TND 7.7 million (USD 2.7 million). This year, exports should reach 8,000 tonnes, or + 4.34% compared to 2020.
New perspectives are opening up for the sector, according to the GIF, with in particular the marketing of new varieties, the technical study in progress to obtain an additional designation of origin, and the various promotional campaigns on nationally and internationally (Spain, France).
Tunisian pomegranates are prized on the Libyan market (1st export market) but also on the markets of the Gulf countries where the export potential is very important.
The majority of pomegranate production comes from 4 main regions of the country: Gabès, with 25,000 tonnes; Béja with 20,000 tonnes; Nabeul with 16,000 tonnes and Kairouan with 15,000 tonnes.
