Logistical problems could disrupt Moroccan exports
In Morocco, citrus production is expected to increase by 15% compared to the previous season, but Moroccan professionals are worried about logistical problems.
The 2021/22 production is expected to reach 2.4 million tonnes, or + 15% compared to the previous season. But the Moroccan citrus sector is worried about the rise in sea freight prices and the shortage of available vessels which could disrupt exports.
According to Moroccan professionals, sea freight rates have increased by + 500% compared to 2019 and fewer ships are available, given the current strong demand linked to the economic recovery after the pandemic. In addition, the number of refrigerated containers per ship is often limited.
Last season Morocco shipped around 35% of its citrus exports by sea to Russia and around 15% to North America.
