New varieties of snacking tomatoes to be launched soon

In the last 10 years, tomato production in Morocco has significantly changed. The growers moved from producing mostly round tomatoes to tomatoes of any type. Today, cherry tomatoes, baby plum tomatoes, coloured selections and cocktail tomatoes “on the vine” total 50% of their production. Such a shift proves the capability of Moroccan producers to adjust to market demands.

By this means, in 2005, Duroc switched its focus on production of “snacking tomatoes”.

This new approach was developed for the UK market and so with a strategy of absolut dedication to snacking tomatoes, Duroc’s position was established firmly. Since then, the R&D department at Duroc have continued improving their business by determining 3 main aspects - development of new varieties, competitiveness and service. These factors are interconnected and interdependent.

Varietal development is focused on the eating experience, the shelf life and the amplification of consumer choice. Every year, the company trials more than 80 varietal selections in collaboration with seed companies.

Celia® (baby plum) and Red Sweet® (cherry tomatoes) are amongst the leaders of this selection process. In 2022, Duroc plans to introduce the new Celia® and the new Red Sweet® which are sweeter and tastier thanks to the higher brix levels. Besides, these new selections were proven to be less sensitive to changes in climatic conditions.

The ‘speciality’ sector Duroc amplified with the new variety selections to challenge the popular protected varieties. Also in 2022, Duroc will present new “on the vine” varieties: Cheribelle® for cherry tomatoes and the new Caramello® for baby plum tomatoes. Both are juicy, have high brix, and a crunchy “bite”. Besides, Duroc will present cocktail round and cocktail plum, both on the vine.

Even though these Celia® and Red Sweet® are characterized by superior characteristics compared to currently available varieties, Duroc projects to include them in the core lines.

Duroc delivers tomatoes not only in bulk or loose format but also in all types of prepacked formats today demanded: bags, shakers, heat sealed punnets, jars, presentation boxes, etc. For this reason, Duroc’s pack house is being completely redesigned and expanded in accordance with the principles of flow-forward logic.

Duroc seeks to be recognized as the Moroccan snacking tomato specialist. Duroc will export 50.000 tons of small tomatoes, thanks to the hard work and dedication of a motivated team.

Fair trade certification is currently in preparation and is projected to be completed before the end of 2021.
