Morocco climbs to 4th place among EU melon suppliers
With an increase of 10% recorded in 2020, Morocco has risen to the 4th rank of melon suppliers to the European Union. Behind Spain, Brazil, the Netherlands which forms the top three and ahead of Costa Rica.
According to Euroestacom data (Icex-Eurostat), Moroccan exports of melons to various EU countries reached 49,970 tonnes for a total value of 59.81 million euros. This represents an increase of + 10% compared to 2019.
This result allows Morocco to climb to the 4th place of melon suppliers to the EU. At the top of the ranking is Spain with 318,730 tonnes (-11.25% compared to 2019), ahead of Brazil with 164,860 tonnes. In 3rd place the Netherlands with 108,160 tonnes. 5th place is occupied by Costa Rica with 35,040 tonnes exported for 29.2 million euros.
In 2020 the countries of the European Union imported 851,040 tonnes of melons, for a total value of 738.03 million euros. In 2019 with more than 17,000 hectares cultivated, Morocco produced 518,926 tons of melons.
