Better seeds for better yields

In Kenya the production of potatoes records low yields. To remedy this, the government has launched a vast national program.

The government has launched a multiplication program for certified seed potatoes and distribution in 6 counties in the country. The seeds were produced by Kalro (Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization) with the highest level of genetic control, accurately representing the different characteristics identified during selection.

The program plans to add 2,500 tonnes of certified potato seeds to the national supply each year. Local potato growers were faced with a lack of quality seeds that had reduced their productivity and incomes. The average production being only 10 tonnes per hectare against a potential of 60 tonnes.

Good seeds are essential for improving potato production, both in volume and in quality.
