The ginger sector must organize to develop

In Togo, as in many other countries, demand for ginger has exploded on the local market. Constantly increasing demand but still insufficient national production.

In these times of health crisis the demand for ginger, a product endowed with medicinal properties, exploded in Togo and everywhere in Africa. Togo produces around 60,000 tonnes of ginger annually, but imports additional volumes from Nigeria from January to early April.

In Togo, ginger is produced throughout the national territory. In the south of the country the yield is better than in the north, the ginger harvested on the other hand in the north is spicier than that in the south. This variation is explained according to ITRA (Togolese Institute for Agronomic Research) by the sunshine which has an effect on the functions which secrete the spicy elements.

The cultivation of ginger requires a high labor intensity but is very profitable according to the producers. The high demand since the health crisis has prompted professionals to improve and organize this sector, which generates income throughout the chain (production, processing, marketing). They count on government support through the ministry in charge of agriculture. A ginger processing plant (investment of 22 million USD) will be commissioned by 2022.
