Slowdown for growth in the agricultural sector
In Kenya, according to official data, the agricultural sector has just registered a marked slowdown in its growth.
An economic survey report based on data from KNBS (Kenya National Bureau of Statistics) indicates that the agricultural sector recorded growth in 2019 of 3.6% against 6% in 2018.
According to the survey, this decline is first of all due to the delay in the rains which, when they arrived, were torrential and destructive. Then the waves of locusts that invaded certain areas, decimating crops in regions trying to recover from the ravages of drought.
In 2019, export revenue from fresh horticultural products decreased by 5.9%. This decrease is due to the decrease in prices offered on the international market. Export quantities increased slightly by 1.8%, from 322,600 tonnes in 2018 to 328,300 tonnes in 2019.
The hoped-for recovery for 2020 is jeopardized by the coronavirus pandemic which has slowed global demand.
