Target 200,000 tonnes of citrus fruit exported
According to data released by the Minister of Agriculture, citrus production in Syria could total 1 million tonnes this season and exports reach 200,000 tonnes.
In Syria, citrus production is concentrated in the coastal provinces. The Lattaquié region should produce 800,000 tonnes and the Tartous region 200,000 tonnes. For this season, a total of 1 million tonnes. The initial estimate and target were 200,000 tonnes exported, but at the end of December the volume shipped was only 140,000 tonnes.
According to the agricultural authorities, Russia is the main destination for Syrian citrus fruits. Before the war started in 2011, Iraq was the No. 1 market for Syrian citrus. Current exports to Iraq are made by cargo planes, but if the land border crossings were reopened the volumes exported could quickly increase.
