The trend is positive for mango production
In Burkina Faso, with improved surveillance and control of fruit flies, mango production has increased from 90 000 tonnes in 2017 to 200 000 tonnes in 2018, and can reach 250 000 tonnes by 2019, according to APROMAB (Association producers of mangoes from Burkina Faso).
This progress has been made possible by extensive fruit fly control projects and the willingness of farmers to adopt control and prevention techniques.
In Burkina Faso, mango production covers nearly 33,000 hectares, mainly in the south-west and central-west of the country. Several varieties (Kent, Amelie, Brooks, Keitt, Valencia, Lippens, Springfels) but Kent is the most requested, especially from European customers.
Mangoes are exported to neighboring countries, Niger and Ghana, as well as the Netherlands, Germany, France, Japan, England and the United States.
