Kenya could triple potato production

In Kenya the average annual production of potatoes is between 2 and 3 million tonnes, but the country has the potential to produce between 8 and 10 million tonnes.

In a workshop with industry leaders, Hosea Machuki, General Manager of the Fresh Produce Exporters Association of Kenya, said: "Kenya can become the largest potato producer in the region while ensuring sufficient production This goal can be achieved through increased innovation, mechanization and large-scale production. "

The current average yield of production is about 8 tonnes per hectare, which is well below the 20 tonnes per hectare recorded in Tanzania and the 40 tonnes per hectare achieved in a country like Ireland. These good yields result from better management and better varieties.

In terms of varieties, Kenya has agreements with several countries for the supply of certified seed. In the country, seed production is still low, but projects are multiplying to boost it. The latest is between NYS (National Youth Service) and Kenya Prisons Service. With the launch a few weeks ago of a new potato seed production unit using aeroponic technology.
