Westfalia Fruit inaugurates a modern avocado plant in Colombia
Westfalia Fruit, one of the world’s leading producers and suppliers of avocados, plans to export into Europe between 3 and 4 million kilos of avocados.
The Westfalia Fruit Group together with its partner, Agricom of Chile, inaugurated a modern Hass avocado packing house in the municipality of Sonsón, Colombia. It is one of the most modern packing facilities of its kind with the largest production capacity in the country.
The General Manager of Westfalia Fruit Colombia, Pedro Aguilar-Niño, confirmed that "this inauguration is a reflection of the increased confidence of investors in Colombia and is a real challenge for the development of the region. Sonsón is a municipality that today constitutes a real production and export center for Hass avocados. "
The packing line was supplied by the New Zealand company Compac, part of Tomra Food, which offers state-of-the-art fruit selection technology. It can process more than 20 tons per hour and should reach a capacity of 3 to 4 million kilos in 2019. The fruit is initially intended for the European markets, but future supply into the USA and Latin American markets is foreseen. In addition, with the Guarne packaging plant in Antioquia, the company could export more than 9 million kilos.
Westfalia Fruit Colombia has its own production orchards (300 ha in high-density planting), a nursery for clonal plant material production and a second packing house in the department of Antioquia. It also buys avocados directly from more than 140 growers and producer groups in the country, without intermediaries, connecting them to international markets. They are required to have the ICA and international GlobalGAP certifications.
Westfalia Fruit will be exhibiting at Fruit Logistica Berlin from February 6-8 at stands D-02 and D-03 in Hall 5.2.
